NUTRITIONAL ASSISTANCE

Kansas Food Stamp Program:
The Food Assistance Program is a nutrition assistance program, which provides a Vision card (plastic debit card) to eligible persons for use in purchasing food from local grocery stores. Complete information regarding food assistance eligibility can be obtained by contacting your nearest Social and Rehabilitation Services Office.  To complete an on-line self-assessment to determine if you might be eligible for benefits, or to apply on-line, visit the website and click on the "Apply for Services" button: www.srskansas.org

Kansas Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC):
The WIC Program provides supplemental foods, nutrition education and referrals to health care, at no cost, to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are determined to be at nutritional risk.  To apply, call 1-785-296-1320 or toll-free at 1-800-332-6262. Kansas Healthwave (SCHIP):

PRESCRIPTION ASSISTANCE

PPARxKS:
Is a program that connects qualified, low-income people with discount prescription drugs, direct from the pharmaceutical manufacturer.  PPARxKS offers a single point of access to public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.  Visit them at www.pparxks.org 
  

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

Kansas Unemployment Insurance:
Unemployment insurance benefits provide temporary financial assistance to workers unemployed through no fault of their own that meet Kansas' eligibility requirements.  In order to establish your unemployment insurance claim, please visit the Kansas Division of Employment Security web site: https://www.uibenefits.dol.ks.gov/
This system is available from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on officially designated State of Kansas holidays.

Kansas Successful Families Program:
Has services for low income families including the following: - Cash assistance, also known as Temporary Assistance for Families (TAF) - Social services designed to strengthen families and remove barriers to economic independence.

ENERGY ASSISTANCE

Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP):
The Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is a Federally funded program that helps eligible households pay a portion of their home energy costs.  You can apply online here:

Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program:
The Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program (K-WAP) operates year round and is an energy conservation program that helps qualified households pay for home weatherization needs.  To apply, contact the local service provider in your county. A map of service providers can be found at www.kshousingcorp.org/display/files/Weatherization/wxbrochure09.pdf. Scroll until you see the heading "How do I apply?" on the left.

CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE

Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services:
Child care subsidy program helps pay for child care costs. It helps many types of families. These include the following:  Families who receive TAF (Temporary Assistance for Families); low-income, working families; some families in education or training activities; teen parents completing high school or GED.  Most families must pay part of the child care costs.  Assistance amounts vary by family based on individual case circumstances.  More information is available at www.srskansas.org or by calling 1-888-369-4777.

FOOD ASSISTANCE

Angel Food Ministries:
Is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable high quality food to those in need. They are helping to ease the grocery burden on 500,000 families around the country each month.   Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week for $30 or a single senior citizen for almost a month for $28. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.
Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork. Many participants in this bonus program appreciate the expanded choices. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can receive, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system.  Menus, pick-up locations and additional information can by found at www.angelfoodministries.com

United Way 2-1-1
This is a free and confidential service that can provide assistance with the following:

Basic Human Needs Resource:
Food banks, clothing, shelters, rent assistance, utility assistance.

Physical and Mental Health Resources:
Medical information lines, crisis intervention services, support groups, counseling, drug and alcohol intervention, rehabilitation, health insurance programs, Medicaid and Medicare, maternal health, children’s health insurance programs.

Employment Support:
Unemployment benefits, financial assistance, job training, transportation assistance, education programs.

Support for Older Americans and Persons with Disabilities:
Home health care, adult day care, congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, respite care, transportation, and homemaker services.

Support for Children, Youth and Families:
Quality childcare, Success by 6, after school programs, Head Start, family resource centers, summer camps and recreation programs, mentoring, tutoring, protective services.

Social Security:
You can apply for retirement benefits online and also use the Retirement Estimator to calculate how much income you will receive depending on when you decide to retire.  Applications should be made three months prior to retirement.  Assistance with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs is also available.  The website is www.socialsecurity.gov or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or 1-800-633-4227 for more information about the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Single Patient Investigational New Drug Program:
Patients who are not eligible for a clinical trail and who are in an immediate medical crisis may be able to receive drugs that are not yet FDA-approved.  Your doctor would have to apply to the FDA for permission to use the drug.

Provides assistance in obtaining medications, treatments and therapies not covered by insurance.  Also assistance obtaining adaptive equipment.  Primarily for those with Parkinson’s disease.

The Brain Tumor Society:
Financial assistance is given through the agency's BTS CARES Financial Assistance Program. This program provides supplementary financial assistance to individuals experiencing financial need. This program covers specific nonmedical costs related to a primary brain tumor diagnosis. Direct medical expenses are not covered.
